Keep your knife sharp
Once you have chosen the type of hunting knife you prefer, you will want to keep it sharp. Whether you have a custom hunting knife, a pocket knife or a collectible hunting knife, one thing is for sure, it will become dull from use. Sharpening a knife is not an easy task for some. There are many types of sharpening aids available for you to choose from. There are stones in various grits, you can get steels or rods and mechanical and electric types. Form your hunting knife to preform properly, it must have a good sharp edge, almost sharp is not good enough. You will need to know the proper sharpening angle for your specific knife. Most hunting knives will come with literature when you buy it. The most popular angles are either 20 or 22 degrees, check with the manufacturer. The mechanical and electrical sharpeners have the angle built in. Most of the rod types have an adjustable angle guide. The stones have no guides, it takes a little practice to get the right angle with these. Once you get the hang of it, keeping that sharp edge on your hunting knife won't be much of an effort at all.
